What is Medicare?
There are four key components to Medicare:
Part A - coverage for Inpatient/Hospital
This typically covers expenses related to inpatient hospital stays, hospice care, skilled nursing care, and some home healthcare services. In addition, there are usually out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments, associated with this coverage.
Part B - coverage for Outpatient/Medical
Part of original Medicare that covers medically necessary outpatient services and supplies. Includes, but not limited to, doctor visits, lab tests, diagnostic screenings, medical equipment, ambulance transportation, and other outpatient services.
Part C - generally referred to as Medicare Advantage Plans offered through private insurance companies. (You must continue to have Medicare Part A and Part B to be eligible.)
Medicare Advantage plans provide all of your coverage for eligible Medicare Part A and Part B services. Many Medicare Advantage plans also include Medicare Part D in them. Medicare-approved private insurance companies offering Medicare Advantage options are contractually required to provide “as good as or better” coverage than what you are entitled to from original Medicare. One of the main differences is that you have to receive those services from contracted providers. These plans have to abide by the restrictions established by the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services. Be sure to read each plan policy you are considering very carefully, as not all plans offer the same supplemental benefits.
Part D - coverage for Prescription Drugs. Medicare Part D plans are also received from private insurance companies.
